Current Trip:
Fall 2007 Eastern Whooping
Crane Migration
Entry September 11
Whooping Crane Update,
September 11, 2007
Tracking Report: Estimated size of the eastern migratory population at
the end of the week was 54 individuals (31 males and 23 females): 51 in
Wisconsin, 2 in Michigan, and 1 in New York.
DAR
Report: ICF and USFWS biologists have been working with the 10 DAR
(direct autumn release) chicks in the morning and have started to let
the birds out on their own more, minimizing the time spent with the
costume. This morning health checks were performed and all the chicks
appeared healthy.
Ultralight Training Report: The 17 cranes
for the ultralight-led migration received their health exams on
September 4 and 5. Nine of the cranes are currently being socialized
into one cohort. The oldest eight cranes will be socialized at a later
date with the combined cohort of the nine youngest and middle-aged
birds. Estimated departure date for the ultralight-led migration is set
for October 10.
Update by Joan Garland, ICF Acting Director of Education. Report
