Current Trip: Fall 2005 Eastern Whooping Crane Migration
Entry October 21

Whooping Crane Update, October 21, 2005

Currently none of the 42 Whooping Cranes in the eastern migratory population have begun their fall migration yet. We anticipate the birds will begin migrating early next month. Thirty-eight of the 42 cranes are in Wisconsin. The location of the other four cranes is currently unknown—-numbers 1-04, 7-04, and 8-04 have not been reported since leaving their location in central Minnesota on October 7. Number 9-03 was last reported in northeastern New York on August 13.

DAR Report: The four chicks are allowed to roam freely with frequent checks by costumed parents during the daytime and are kept in a wet pen at night. They have been associating with Whooping Cranes #12-02 (unpaired male) and #11-02 and #17-02 (breeding pair).

Meanwhile, the 20 Whooping Cranes and crew from Operation Migration remain grounded in Green County, Wisconsin due to high winds.
