Whooping Crane Update, November 30, 2007

A lot has happened over the past few days in the world of Whooping Crane migration. First off, #33-07 was found! He was found on Wednesday near French Lick, Indiana--not too far from where he had dropped out near the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour, Indiana. ICF’s Sara Zimorski picked up his radio signal while she was tracking other Whooping Cranes. Sara and Windway Aviation pilot Mike Frakes were tracking from the air when they picked up #33-07’s signal. They had to land to get fuel, so Sara contacted Operation Migration’s air tracking crew and gave them the bird’s coordinates. OM’s ground crew soon arrived on the scene, boxed #33-07 and safely transported him to join up with his flockmates in Washington County, Kentucky. Now all 17 birds are back together and anxiously awaiting a change in the weather. Unfortunately, they did not fly again this morning.

The same day #33-07 was found, #5-01, from the first class of ultralight-led cranes, was the third Whooping Crane to arrive in Florida this year (two 2006 DAR cranes arrived earlier this month).

The seven 2007 DAR (Direct Autumn Release) cranes are in two locations. Six of the cranes remain at their previous location in central Illinois. DAR bird #46-07 has chosen a slightly more adventurous route and is currently in southwestern Arkansas.

Update by Joan Garland, ICF Acting Director of Education. Report provided by Sara Zimorski, ICF Aviculturist.
