Whooping Crane Update, November 29, 2005

A lot of migration activity has occurred over the past week--here are a few of the highlights:

The last Whooping Cranes remaining in Wisconsin began migration on November 24. A major cold front with clear skies moved into the area resulting in an exodus of the remaining Whooping Cranes and most Sandhills.

By the end of the week, all 11 cranes from 2004 had arrived in Florida. Number 7-01, the female with the nonfunctional transmitter, is at the Hiwassee National Wildlife Refuge. The whereabouts of 9-03, the Whooping Crane in New York, are still currently unknown.

The three cranes previously in Minnesota, numbers 1-04, 7-04, and 8-04 arrived in Florida on November 26.Three of the Direct Autumn Release (DAR) cranes, numbers 28-05, 32-05, and 33-05 were in Tennessee. Number 27-05 is currently in Kentucky. All four birds began migration on November 24.

With a strong tailwind, the juveniles had outdistanced the three ground trackers by the time they reached Illinois, and additional tracking detected no signals. A PTT (satellite) reading that night indicated that number 27 was roosting just northeast of Clark County, Indiana. She had flown 455 miles on the first day of her first autumn migration! She was not with the other Whooping Cranes, and their roost locations were not determined.

On November 25, air tracking found numbers 33-05, 32-05, and 28-05 on or in the immediate vicinity of Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge, Meigs County, Tennessee. They had reached Hiwassee on the second day of migration. During the afternoon on November 25, number 27 flew southward and landed in Bullitt County, Kentucky. She was highly visible and exposed to the public at this site. She was retrieved by ICF’s Sara Zimorski, dressed in crane costume. Number 27 was released on a small waterfowl refuge. Today she left that site and is currently in southern Kentucky.
