Current Trip: Fall 2007 Eastern Whooping Crane Migration Entry December 9 Whooping Crane Update, December 9, 2007 The six DAR (Direct Autumn Release) Whooping Cranes, previously in central Illinois, resumed migration on December 5 after the pond they had been roosting in became frozen. They flew approximately 170 miles and are currently in southern Illinois. The other DAR crane, #46-07 remains at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs County, Tennessee. The 17 Whooping Cranes and crew with Operation Migration finally arrived in Tennessee on Thursday. All 17 birds successfully made the flight and are currently awaiting favorable weather conditions to continue the migration to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge.
