Current Trip: Fall 2006: Eastern Whooping Crane Migration Entry October 11 Where are They Now?, October 11, 2006 The 18 ultralight-led Whooping Cranes and crew from Operation Migration flew again yesterday—-October 10. They flew approximately 18 miles to their current location in Juneau County, Wisconsin. Seventeen of the cranes made it all the way to the stopover site. Number 18-06 made it within 5 miles of the stopover before he dropped out and was crated and trucked to the pensite. All 18 birds are doing well and awaiting their next fly date. Currently the weather here in Wisconsin is not pretty—-it is sleeting outside my window, with snow forecast for this evening (yuck!). The next opportunity for flying looks like Saturday. Meanwhile, the distribution of the 61 eastern migratory Whooping Cranes and 2 chicks remains: Wisconsin--55 adults/subadults and 1 or 2 chicks (one of the chicks has not been located since the evening of September 12, when it was observed foraging alone on the Necedah NWR). Three cranes are currently in Iowa and 3 in Michigan. Update compiled by Joan Garland, Acting Director of Education.
