| ICF was pleased to learn of the recent sentencing of two men convicted of shooting an eastern migratory Whooping Crane in January 2012. A Whooping Crane released in 2008, part of a nesting pair, was shot and killed by John Burke and Jason McCarter in Knox County, Ind. A citizen tip led to charges against McCarter and Burke. The two men pled guilty and were sentenced on November 21. The men will receive three years probation, 120 hours community service at the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area, revocation of their hunting privileges for three years, and payment of a $5,000 donation to ICF. The donation will be used to further Whooping Crane conservation efforts and raise awareness through education about Whooping Cranes and endangered species conservation, with the goal of preventing future senseless shootings or harassment of cranes. | A citizen tip led to the recent sentencing of two men for the illegal shooting of a Whooping Crane (#27-08) in Indiana last January.
