How long should we plan on staying?
Most visitors spend at least two hours on site.

How long is the guided tour?
Guided tours usually last 1.5 -2 hours.

Do we need reservations for a group tour?
Yes, all groups must have advance registration for field trips. Field trips can be scheduled by contacting ICF's Education Department at (608) 356-9462, ext. 127.

Do I have to take a guided tour?
No. ICF also offers self-guided tours at no charge. Tape recorders are available at the Gift Shop. The recorded tour guides visitors around our crane exhibit area.

What is the latest that we could schedule a guided tour?
We usually do not schedule guided tours later than 3:30 p.m. to accommodate for a 1.5 - 2 hour tour.

Can the picnic area or covered gazebo be reserved for my group?
The covered gazebo and open picnic area at ICF are available on a first-come-first-serve basis only.

Are there vending machines or food available at ICF? Are there hotels or campgrounds nearby?
ICF has beverage vending machines only. Our site is located a short distance from Baraboo and the Wisconsin Dells. For information on restaurants and lodging, please visit:
Can I bring my pet to ICF?
ICF does not allow pets beyond the admissions area for the safety of our birds. We appreciate your cooperation.

How long is the walking tour?
The entire paved trail system through our crane exhibit area, including the Schroeder Exhibit Hall is approximately half a mile long. Please keep in mind that the walking tour is very slow paced and there are benches throughout the site. About half-way through the walking tour, visitors are encouraged to visit our Amoco Whooping Crane Exhibit, a covered amphitheatre with benches, pit toilets, and a water fountain.

If I find an injured crane, can I bring it to ICF?
ICF does not accept injured or orphaned animals. Please contact the National Wildlife Rehabilitator's Association at www.nwrawildlife.org.

Is the tour indoors or out?
Tours begin indoors in the Cudahy Visitor Center theatre. The remainder of the tour is outdoors. Tours go out rain or shine, so please dress accordingly.

Is there shade available during the tour?
Our trails have limited shade available. There are two shade areas near the exhibit area, and our Amoco Whooping Crane Exhibit is covered. However, please be prepared for exposure to sun during your visit.

Are the cranes wild?
ICF is home to a captive population of cranes. Our birds do not migrate, and are available to visit throughout the visitor season.

Do you go outside on tours if it is raining?
Yes. However, guided tours will not go outside when it is lightning.

Do you have any wheelchairs available?
We have several wheelchairs and individual motorized scooters available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Is there a storage area available?
There are no lockers or storage areas on the ICF site.

Do you have a gift shop?
Yes. The ICF Gift Shop offers a wonderful array of items from around the world.

How hilly is your site?
ICF's main exhibit area's paved trail system has only gentle slopes. However, the unpaved trails do traverse several larger hills and some are uneven and steep.

When is the best time to see cranes dancing?
Cranes will usually dance in the early part of our visitor season. However, we cannot guarantee certain behaviors from any of our birds--they decide when they will dance!

When is the best time of year to visit ICF?
Each season offers something different at ICF. Spring flowers, and dramatic threat displays from the cranes greet our early season visitors. Summer treats visitors to an explosion of color on our prairie, and autumn colors are also spectacular in south-central Wisconsin.

When is the best time of day to visit in order to avoid crowds?
ICF hosts approximately 8,000 school children each year. During the months of April, May and June, please consider visiting us in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.

Do you have baby changing facilities on site?
Baby changing facilities are available in the Cudahy Visitor Center's restrooms.

Can I feed the cranes?
No. Our cranes are given scientifically formulated diets. To ensure the health and well-being of our cranes, please do not feed them.

Can I pet the cranes?
No. For the safety of you and the cranes, please do not attempt to touch the birds.

If I visit in the fall, will your cranes have already migrated?
The cranes that live at ICF are captive birds and do not migrate.

Do you have programs available for the hearing impaired?
ICF offers printed versions of our self-guided tours for hearing impaired visitors.

Can I bring a video camera?
We encourage you to bring your video camera and take advantage of this amazing opportunity. ICF is the only place in the world where visitors can see all 15 species of cranes.
