ICF Aviculturist Sara Zimorski has been radio-tracking the older whooping cranes by airplane the past few days in Florida. She has confirmed that 14 birds have safely arrived there. A total of 18 birds had completed their migration to Florida, but for some unknown reason four of them headed back north and are currently in southern Georgia. Sara is now back north tracking the whooping cranes that are migrating through Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. There are five biologists currently tracking the older whooping cranes and the 2008 DAR (Direct Autumn Release) birds along the eastern flyway. Considering there are 74 cranes in this population, it’s no small task! The Tracking Team members are: Sara Zimorski, ICF Aviculturist (pictured on right) Richard Urbanek, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (pictured on left) Eva Szyszkoski, ICF Whooping Crane Field Manager (middle) Tom Czubek, ICF Tracking Intern Rosemary Hartman, ICF Tracking Intern (Tom and Rosemary are new to the team, and since they’re never in one place for very long—it’s hard to get a photo!)
