Ultralight-led Cranes
Arrive at Hiwassee NWR, November 25, 2005
The 19 cranes and crew with Operation Migration departed Fentress
County, Tennessee this morning and just recently arrived at Hiwassee
National Wildlife Refuge in Meigs County, Tennessee. In past years, the
cranes have had trouble flying over the Cumberland Ridge--the
birds’
first exposure to mountains. As I watched them leave this morning (in
the bitter cold!), Joe Duff, lead ultralight pilot, had 17 cranes and
pilot Brooke Pennypacker had two cranes. I just heard that all 19
cranes arrived safely at Hiwassee and none of them had to be crated.
Hiwassee is just over the halfway point in the migration. With
today’s
successful flight, I can almost smell the sea salt air in Florida.
Well, almost…
