Research Activities
Since 2002, Dr. Felipe Chavez-Ramirez, Director of the Platte River Whooping Crane Trust in Nebraska, has been ICF’s principal researcher in studying Whooping Cranes, blue crabs, and freshwater inflow at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. During the past three years, Dr. Chavez-Ramirez monitored blue crab populations at the refuge, monitored Whooping Crane distribution and behavior, and identified individual cranes through a method called "voice printing." Developed by German scientist Dr. Bernhard Wessling, this remarkable technique uses voice prints generated by computer analysis of digitally recorded crane calls to identify individual Whooping Cranes. Voice printing enables identification while eliminating the need for capturing cranes to attach color leg bands – a risk to both the bird and the handler!
