There are currently four active renests in the Eastern migratory population. Three nests are located on the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, and a fourth nest is located north of the refuge in Wood County, Wisconsin. One of the renests on the refuge belongs to the “First Family”--numbers 11-02 and 17-02, the pair that hatched two whooping crane chicks on June 22, 2006. One of the chicks was predated prior to migration. The other chick, #W1-06 is currently on the Necedah NWR with her mate, #10-03.
