Nesting Activity II, May 23, 2007

Estimated size of the eastern migratory Whooping Crane population is 57 individuals (32 males and 25 females): 53 in Wisconsin, 2 in Michigan, 1 in New York, and 1 migrating (last record in Ohio).

Nesting:
Of the four pairs of Whooping Cranes that were observed nest building last week, only one pair produced egg(s). Whooping Crane pair #3-03 and #17-03 renested and began incubating on May 14. They are the only pair currently incubating. The other three pairs built nests, but no eggs were produced.

Ohio:
Whooping Crane #16-05, last reported in Florida in late April, was observed in northeastern Ohio on May 12. He left the area shortly after that observation, and no subsequent reports have been received.

Michigan:
Number 18-03 was last reported on farmlands and small wetlands in west-central Michigan on May 8.

DAR (Direct Autumn Release) Crane #33-05 remains in southwestern Michigan.

New York:
Number 9-03 continues to roost and forage in wetlands and cornfields in upstate New York.

Wisconsin:
DAR Whooping Crane #27-06, retrieved from Michigan on May 14, remains in or near the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge--he was usually observed with Sandhill Cranes.

Whooping Crane number W1-06, the juvenile from the First Family was recently observed near the core reintroduction area with numbers 3-05 and 7-05 (photo).
