More Class of 2007
Cranes Arrive at Necedah NWR, April 24, 2008
On April 21st, while checking a few birds who reside off the refuge, I
intercepted the signals of 7-07, 10-07, and 22-07 heading northwest.
These birds were being monitored in McHenry County, Illinois by an
outside cooperator, who had not seen them for 2 days. They likely
continued migration on this day, or the day before. They continued to
Waupaca County, Wisconsin where they dropped out in a pasture
surrounded by a corn stubble field and a large pond. The next day, they
remained at this location. However, yesterday, while ICF intern Colleen
Wisinki headed north to check on them, they began heading south towards
the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge. They circled the core
reintroduction area throughout the day, then headed northwest for the
evening and roosted in an undetermined location. They will likely
return to the core reintroduction area soon. Also yesterday, #9-07
continued his wandering and circled the core reintroduction area
throughout the day.
In
other migration news, on April 20th, we got a report of a single
whooping crane in Monroe County, Wisconsin. This turned out to be
#3-07, who was last heard flying through Chicago! He remained at this
location until yesterday, when he flew just southwest of the refuge.
ICF tracking interns Eva and Colleen tracked him throughout the day,
and passed him over to me at 1:30 pm. He continued southeast and ended
up in Columbia County. He will likely remain at this location for a few
days and then continue his period of "wandering”.
After arriving
in the core reintroduction area on April 19, numbers 16-07, 17-07,
21-07, 24-07, and 26-07 continued moving around the area. They even
spent the night on the refuge on April 21. On April 22, these 5 moved
much farther south, past Madison, where they remain today.
Still
unaccounted for are numbers 27-07, 33-07, 6-07, 12-07, and 13-07--we
will be listening for them to pass over the refuge in the next few days.
