Meet ICF's President and CEO Dr. Richard Beilfuss
Dr. Richard Beilfuss, has authored the report, A Risky Climate for South African Hydro, which draws from ICF’s work in the Zambezi River basin and warns that new and proposed dams on Southern Africa’s largest river are ill-prepared to withstand the shocks of a changing climate.
He is an expert in the emerging field of “environmental flows”, which describe the quantity, timing, and quality of water flows required to sustain freshwater and estuarine ecosystems and the human livelihoods and well-being that depend on these ecosystems. He has a Ph.D. in Land Resources (Wetland Ecology), a Masters Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering-Hydrology, a Masters Degree in Water Resources Management and a Bachelors degree in Natural Resource Economics, and is a Licensed Professional Hydrologist. Prior to rejoining ICF, Rich was appointed as Senior Advisor to the World Wildlife Fund and as an Affiliate of the Natural Heritage Institute, and is now continuing in this capacity through ICF to improve water management in the Zambezi River basin of southern Africa and elsewhere. In addition to his work with ICF, Rich also is an Adjunct Professor for the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering and for the University of Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, where he enjoys teaching courses and supervising students.
Meet ICF's Co-founder Dr. George Archibald
In 1973, when cranes were in a perilous situation and many of the fifteen remaining species were on the brink of extinction, Dr. Archibald and the late Ron Sauey, founded the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, as the world center for the study and preservation of cranes. Dr. Archibald received his undergraduate degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and completed his Ph.D. at Cornell University. For 27 years George served as the President of ICF. Today he continues to advance ICF’s mission in Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Cuba, China, India, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, South Korea and Russia.
In recognition of his accomplishments, George has received four honorary doctorates and many awards, including the Gold Medal from the World Wildlife Fund, a Fellows Award from the MacArthur Foundation, the Wildlife Conservation Medal from the Zoological Society of San Diego, the Lilly Medal and Indianapolis Prize presented by the Indianapolis Zoo, the Douglas H. Pimlott Award from Nature Canada, and the Dan W. Lufkin Prize for Environmental Leadership from The Audubon Society.
