Lift Off!
In early to mid-October, the Whooping Cranes depart the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge and began their 1,200 mile migration to Florida. The flock spends the winter on the Gulf coast of Florida at the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. The birds are monitored by International Crane Foundation and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists throughout the winter. In late March or early April the cranes begin their spring migration unaided by ultralights. The spring migration generally does not last as long as the fall migration. On their own, the cranes are able to fly more efficiently by riding thermals and soaring, rather than expending energy flapping their wings to fly behind the ultralight.
