Fire on the Prairie: Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Land Management

This two-day course will cover the ecology of fire, fire behavior principles, and the elements of fire management planning, all with a particular focus on prairie, savanna, and wetland ecosystems of the Midwest. All participants will operate basic fire management tools, view the layout and preparation of a fire unit and, weather permitting, work with fire and fire tools as well as conduct ring fires. Significant further experience is required before students are prepared to serve as squad boss, burn boss or conduct burns on their own. The course will provide valuable basic training for fire crew members. Participants may be able to volunteer on additional burns during the following weeks. The course does not fit NWCG curriculum but does cover similar material, with an emphasis on the ecology of fire. Instructors: Jeb Barzen, Anne Lacy, and Andy Gossens - International Crane Foundation staff members. *The location may change depending on where the field training is held, but will be in the Baraboo area
