North America: Research in the Field > Annual Midwest Crane Count > Get Involved
How Do I Get Involved?
Get involved with Crane Count! Volunteers are the most important part of this unique program. You can play an integral role in helping ICF study sandhill cranes! Join over 3,000 volunteer counters throughout the Upper Midwest on a April morning to count cranes and witness the awakening of dawn. For helping ICF collect valuable crane data, you will receive results later in the year, with a certificate for free admission to ICF's site in Baraboo, Wisconsin.
Crane Count is organized by county in Wisconsin and portions of Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota. Each county has a County Coordinator who can tell you what you need know to accurately count cranes. To participate, get in touch with your County Coordinator. They often hold a County Meeting to train participants, distribute data sheets and other handouts, and provide updates about the cranes.
Please take a look at "Counter's Information" for resources and information dedicated to Crane Count participants - Frequently Asked Questions, Sandhill Crane Information, etc.
If your county is not involved in the Crane Count, and you think you may be interested in becoming a County Coordinator, or if you just need more information, please contact Joan Garland.
