Current Trip: Fall 2005 Eastern Whooping Crane Migration
Entry December 6

Georgia on my Mind, December 6, 2005

After five days of being grounded in Pike County, Georgia, the 19 Whooping Cranes and crew with Operation Migration (OM) finally departed. The morning was very cold as a small group of us gathered to watch the cranes and ultralights depart. First off, the wings of the ultralights needed to be de-iced. Coming from central Wisconsin I imagined Georgia covered in peach, pecan and cotton fields in a constant state of 60 degrees. As I discovered this morning, winter’s reach includes the state of Georgia. Once the wings were de-iced, OM pilot Chris Gullikson took off in the lead with 19 cranes. Midway through the flight, 12 cranes broke off and were picked up by pilot Richard Van Heuvelen. All 19 cranes made the approximate 96 mile flight to Terrell County, Georgia.

Meanwhile, just one state away, 21 of the previous years’ cranes have arrived successfully in Florida.
