Eight Whooping Crane Nests Confirmed! April 9, 2009

Today Sara Zimorski, WCEP Tracking & Winter Management Team Co-chair, and Eva Szyszkoski, ICF Tracking Field Manager, conducted an aerial survey of Necedah National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding areas to identify whooping crane nests.  They confirmed there are a total of eight whooping crane pairs currently on nests!  Three of the nests were just discovered today.  There are four additional pairs that haven’t begun nesting yet, including #W1-06 (the wild-hatched chick from 2006) and her mate, #10-03.  Let’s hope the Easter Bunny delivers more than just chocolate eggs this weekend.
