DAR Cranes Complete
Migration to Florida! December 12, 2006
All four DAR (Direct Autumn Release) Whooping Cranes arrived in Florida
on December 8. Numbers 26-06 and 28-06 have been tracked to several
different locations in Hernando and Pasco Counties. These two cranes
began migration from the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge on October
28. From Wisconsin they continued to a Sandhill Crane staging area in
Jackson County, Indiana; then continued migration to the Hiwassee
Wildlife Refuge, Meigs County, Tennessee; and finished their migration
to Florida on December 8.
Numbers
27-06 and 32-06 also arrived in Florida on December 8. These two DAR
juveniles remain in a large Sandhill Crane flock in Lafayette County,
Florida. Numbers 27-06 and 32-06 began migration with adult Whooping
Crane pair #12-03 and #16-03 from the Necedah NWR on November 30. The
two DAR birds completed their migration to Florida in just eight days.
The adult pair is currently not with them.
