Bhutan: Nov 2010

Dear Friends,

Having traveled the world for almost four decades, I’m often asked about my favorite places.  Actually, I make terrific friends in every nation and together we always find special places with cranes.

None-the-less, I’m sometimes stressed by destruction of the environment and the masses of humanity. Bhutan is the exception. Without hesitation I can state that this tiny kingdom perched on the south slope of the Himalayas and sandwiched between China and India, is my favorite place on earth.  Seventy-three percent of the rugged slopes are carpeted by virgin forests, part of ecosystems each adapted to climates ranging from tropical to arctic and with a diversity of wildlife from elephants to snow leopards.

There are just over a half million Bhutanese. Their national slogan, “Gross National Happiness,” is achieved by protecting their culture, revering nature, and through sound administration and carefully planned development. They dress in traditional regalia and they love to dance and sing.  Many Bhutanese speak the King’s English.

The verdant slopes of Bhutan are cleansed by monsoons in summer and at higher altitudes are carpeted by snow in winter. Between these seasons, the blue skies of autumn with warm days and cool nights create the perfect conditions for a visit. Consequently, for more than a decade, each November I bring a small group of travelers with me to Bhutan to experience the many charms of the “Cloud Kingdom” including the flocks of Black-necked Cranes that fly over the peaks of the Himalayas to spend the winter.

This November 1 – 16, I welcome you to join me. The cost of the trip is $9,000, of which $3,000 is a tax deductible donation to ICF. The attached handout provides the details. If you are interested, please contact my assistant, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
