New this year! The International Crane Foundation partners with eBird for 2012 Crane Count.
The Annual Midwest Crane Count is one of the largest citizen-based wildlife surveys in the world. One of the primary purposes of the Crane Count is to monitor the abundance and distribution of cranes in the Upper Midwest. Each year, the Crane Count involves over 3,000 volunteer participants spread over 100 counties in six states. It is this successful growth and our desire to go “paperless” that has prompted us to move the data collection to a more robust birding database housed and managed by eBird.
The Crane Count will still be organized by county in Wisconsin and portions of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota. To participate and be assigned a site, click here to contact your County Coordinator.
To help guide you through this transition, in the next two weeks we will be providing you with detailed instructions on how eBird works, and we will be working closely with county coordinators to provide them with additional instructions and new directions for all counters.
If you don't already have an eBird account, we encourage you to check out eBird and set up your personal account:
1. Start by navigating to the eBird website at http://ebird.org. Click on ‘Register as a New User’ in the upper left of the web page to create a new account. Choose an account user name and password and complete the registration form.
2. After creating an account, you are automatically directed to the web page for ‘Submit Observations.’ This is where you or your county coordinator will enter your Crane Count data after the count on April 14. We will post detailed instructions on how to enter your data soon.
We realize this is a very sudden change; however, we are heartened by the fact that eBird is a well established and easy process for data entry that we will work to guide you through. In the long run we feel there is potential for the data to be used for long-term crane conservation on a larger scale.
Follow the links to the right for more information on becoming involved in the Crane Count. If your county is not involved in the Crane Count, and you are interested in becoming a County Coordinator, contact ICF's Crane Count Coordinator at
