12/13/04: Cranes Arrive
Chassahowitzka!
Thirteen Whooping Cranes and the Operation Migration crew arrived
safely yesterday (Sunday Dec 13) at the Chassahowitzka National
Wildlife Refuge after a 64 day, 1,200 mile journey.
Pilot Richard Van Heuvelen arrived first with 6 cranes, followed
shortly by Brooke Pennypacker with 7 cranes.
The
trip across seven states started on October 10 from the Necedah
National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin. Fourteen Whooping Cranes,
hatched in spring 2004, began the journey. On Friday, one of the cranes
was euthanized at a Gainesville medical faciltiy after she was found to
be suffering from parasitic and bacterial infections.
The cranes
will now be monitored closely by biologists over the winter and tracked
next spring when they return to Wisconsin unaided.
