11/5/04: Making up for Lost Time

Today at 6:23 a.m. the Operation Migration crew www.operationmigration.org/Field_Journal.html and 14 Whooping Cranes finally departed Kankakee County, Illinois.

Three of the cranes turned back and were crated and driven to the stopover in Indiana. Two additional birds also dropped out midway into the flight.

The remaining nine Whooping Cranes (and pilots), after being in Illinois for 15 days, were apparently quite eager to see another state. To put Illinois, and its bad weather curse far behind them, they skipped the first stopover in Indiana and flew 92 miles to Boone County, Indiana! Their total flying time was two hours, which is the longest flight time so far on this migration.
