Updates on the Older Whooping Cranes

Over the past week, migration was stalled due to poor weather conditions, and many of the migrating birds only made local movements. All the WCEP partners want to thank Windway Aviation and pilots Mike Voechting and Mike Frakes for their dedicated efforts this week!

1-03, 9-03 & 18-03: (the birds who summered in Michigan) have moved southward down the Atlantic coast and are now in Jones County, North Carolina. No. 5-03, who also spent the summer in Michigan, was killed by a predator (probably a bobcat) on either November 12 or 13 while roosting in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge in South Carolina.

The following is a summary of the movements of the reintroduced Whooping Cranes in the eastern migratory population from Nov 13-21.

Nos. 1-01, 2-01, 2-02, & 8-02: remain in Central Wisconsin.

Nos. 6-01, 3-02, 15-02, & 16-02: were not found in any of their usual locations and may have begun migration.

Nos. 9-02, 13-02, 18-02, 3-03, 12-03, & 16-03: departed Wisconsin on Nov 20-21.

No. 2-03: Illinois.

Nos. 7-03 & 17-03: South Carolina.

Nos. 4-03 & 11-03: Geogia.

Nos. 10-03 & 13-03: Kentucky.

Nos. 5-01, 7-01, 1-02, 4-02, 5-02, 6-03, & 18-04: Hiwassee State Wildlife Refuge, Tennessee.

No. 14-02: Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, Florida.
